The Milky Way Mapper needs fundamental parameters for stars, white dwarfs, and binary systems to complete its science goals. We also desire to understand how results obtained from high-resolution near-IR APOGEE spectra compare to results obtained from low-resolution optical BOSS spectra. More globally, we plan to compare our results with other large-scale spectroscopic surveys of the Milky Way, including DESI, WEAVE, and 4MOST. Therefore, there are several curated cartons implemented or planned for MWM.

Cartons

manual_mwm_crosscalib_apogee

WEAVE: The cross-calibration sample includes 4 GCs and 3 OCs, all equatorial (-4 < dec < + 18) chosen to cover the metallicity range between [Fe/H] -2.5 to +0.0. Targets within them are selected to be FGK stars. The clusters are:

    • GCs
      • NGC 5904 [Fe/H]=-1.3   488 stars
      • NGC 6254 [Fe/H]=-1.6    317
      • NGC 7078 [Fe/H]=-2.3    288
      • NGC 6838 [Fe/H]=-0.8    257
    • OCs
      • NGC_2112     [Fe/H]=-0.1   644
      • Trumpler_5    [Fe/H]=-0.4    779

manual_mwm_crosscalib_yso_apogee

The cross-calibration yso cartons contain targets selected as validators/calibrators by the 4MOST survey of young stars (4SYS or S12). The scope of these cartons is to obtain APOGEE spectra of the same targets to have a small sample for cross-validation between the surveys.
WEAVE might be included in the future as well.

The labels to be validated are essentially: Teff, logg, [Fe/H], and, where possible, vsini.

Both cross-calibration yso catalogues contain two sets of targets.

  1. Targets in common between 4SYS,  APOGEE (dr17), and Gaia ESO (dr6). The targets are member of young/intermediate age clusters and are in the temperature range 3000-5500 K.
  2. Targets that are members of the same clusters as 1. (from Cantat-Gaudin+20), x-matched with Gaia DR3 AP, with Teff < 5800 and logg > 3.8.

We also applied additional cuts to comply with the SNR requirement of APOGEE H < 13 mag.

manual_validation

The stars in both the manual_validation_apogee and manual_validation_boss cartons were chosen from the 4MOST, DESI, PSF and WEAVE surveys with the goal of comparing between surveys and establishing a strategy that will put all stellar parameters onto the same scale. There are also stars from Open Cluster, Globular Clusters, low reddening stars, Gaia Benchmark stars, planet hosts, and, for BOSS, APOKASC stars all for calibration purposes.

manual_mwm_validation_cool_apogee

The list includes the following validation classes: open cluster members observed by 4MOST, Gaia benchmark stars, planet host stars, stars with high quality atmospheric parameters from GES DR3, GALAH DR3 and GALAH-GES common stars.

manual_mwm_validation_cool_boss

The list includes members from the following clusters: M92, M55, M13, M5, M107, M67, M35, NGC 6819, NGC 6791, 47 Tuc. Cluster members are selected using Gaia proper motions. The list also includes planet host stars, Gaia benchmark stars, low E(B-V) stars from APOGEE DR17, and APOKASC stars.

manual_mwm_validation_hot_apogee

Compilation of stars of spectral type O, B, A, and F that have been studied in literature based on medium- to high-resolution (R>~10 000) spectroscopy. We collect Teff, log g, and vsini parameters from some 15 literature sources and include stars both in the Galaxy and Magellanic Clouds. Our original selection comprises 3599 objects of which 3535 have unique Gaia EDR3 identifiers. Sixty two stars are found to have parameter values reported in multiple literature sources. Two of those 62 targets have parameter measurements reported in three different literature sources, while the remaining 60 stars have their parameters reported in two source.

In the next step, we cross-match our validation sample of 3535 stars with Gaia DR3 and select those objects for which the esphs DR3 Teff and log g parameter measurements exist. This selection returns 1702 stars whose Teff, log g, and vsini distributions are shown with green bars in Figure 1 in the attached PDF. Ultimately, the validation sample of 3535 stars is cross-matched with the MWM ob_core carton stellar sample. Of 775 stars matched, 515 have the Gaia DR3 esphs Teff and logg parameter measurements available and 381 have all three atmospheric parameters – Teff, log g, and vsini – deduced.

manual_mwm_validation_hot_boss

The BOSS version of manual_mwm_validation_hot_apogee

manual_mwm_validation_rv_apogee

This v1 carton is filled with known RV stable stars from Trifonov, et. al 2020 and Butler et al. 2017 and then applying the following selection criteria.

Selection Criteria
  • Uses the same photometric quality cuts as mwm_bin_rv_short
  • 7 < H < 10.8
  • Number of Epochs >= 12
  • Temporal baseline >= 2000 days
  • Std deviation (RV) <= 10 m/s

mwm_legacy_ir2opt

This carton’s goal is to obtain BOSS spectra for stars observed by APOGEE to aid in the calibration of BOSS data. The high-quality information from the APOGEE spectra can be used for empirical derivations of stellar parameters from BOSS spectra. This carton uses Gaia DR2 magnitudes to ensure that the stars are not too bright in the optical.

The target selection relies on the Legacy APOGEE “Merge File” table (mos_sdss_apogeeallstarmerge_r13), described in detail under the mwm_rv_long_bplates carton in the Binary program. This table consolidates duplicate entries of the APOGEE allVisit and allStar files from DR16 and is available on the SAS and on CasJobs. The full selection criteria are:

  • Target is in APOGEE DR16 “Merge File”
  • 13 < G < 18
  • GBP > 13
  • GRP > 13

mwm_legacy_ir2opt_boss

This carton is the v1 update to mwm_legacy_ir2opt. The updated selection code is below:

  • Target is in APOGEE DR17 “Merge File”
  • 8 < G < 18

manual_mwm_boss_only_cluster_jan_2025_high_priority

Targets selected from globular and open clusters (according to Hunt & Reffert 2024) observed with the BOSS instrument. These targets were observed with longer a longer integration time during engineering while the LCO APOGEE instrument was under maintenance. High priority prioritizes 1) overlap with APOGEE in globular clusters and 2) faint objects in open clusters

manual_mwm_boss_only_cluster_jan_2025_low_priority

Targets selected from globular and open clusters (according to Hunt & Reffert 2024)  observed with the BOSS instrument. These targets were observed with longer a longer integration time during engineering while the LCO APOGEE instrument was under maintenance. Low priority targets are other cluster members which are not in *_high_priority
