Ricardo López-Valdivia

1. Can you describe your role in the SDSS collaboration and what you enjoy most about it?

I am part of the YSO group, and I enjoy characterizing low-mass stars.

2. Can you tell us about your educational background and how you got interested in the field of astronomy/astrophysics?

I used to live in a big city, and when I visited my grandparents in the countryside, I always enjoyed seeing the starry sky. It was at that moment (I was about 10 or 11 years old) that I realized that I liked astronomy. Years later, I studied physics in my home state (Jalisco, Mexico) and then moved to Puebla, Mexico to pursue a master and PhD in Astronomy.

3. What projects are you currently working on and what are you most excited about?

I am currently working on the determination of atmospheric parameters and chemical abundances of young stellar objects. The main goal is to measure any abundance gradient within star-forming regions and the galactic abundance gradient using stars.

4. Can you describe how you balance work and personal life, and what advice would you give to someone just starting in the field?

I try to maintain a balance but it isn’t easy. I established working hours throughout the day and I did not attend anything related to the work outside these hours.

5. Can you share with us a unique hobby or interest that you have outside of work?

I enjoy watching sci-fi series.
